Well, the time has come. I haven't been writing much lately, but I'm ready to come back.
I've started a new blog at dmcbatman.wordpress.com, and will no longer be updating this one.
Thanks for reading, and hope to see you over at WP!

[a letter to my congresswoman]
Ms. Sanchez,
I am writing to you to ask your support of HR 833, which has recently been referred to the House Financial Services Committee.
The bill would abolish the Federal Reserve and end the destructive monetary policy that has resulted in boom/bust cycles, as well as the inflation that has reduced the buying power of our savings. This is the kind of real change that America needs, and would return our monetary policy to a Constitutional basis.
I appreciate the work you're doing on behalf of Californians such as myself in Congress, and wish you all the best.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
David Condolora

I encourage you to read about HR 833 and contact your representatives as well. It would do a world of good.

[a letter I submitted to my congressional representatives this morning]
Ms. Boxer/Feinstein/Sanchez,
As a California resident, I am writing to implore you to reject the stimulus bill that is making it's way through Congress. There are two truths to the current economic situation our country is facing:
1. We as a nation are near-bankrupt
2. The economy needs to correct itself and remove the bad debt
This stimulus package will only serve to exacerbate both situations: it will pile nearly $1 trillion dollars of additional debt on the backs of Americans, and it will further prolong the recession by falsely shoring up the economy. The benefits will be few and short-lived, while the consequences will last for a very long time.
Please reject the stimulus bill. Our children already have enough of an economic burden waiting for them.
Thank you very much for your time.
Sincerely,
- David Condolora

my life at f/3.5 18mm
I need a faster lens.
Since people have been clamoring (erm...perhaps not), I have decided to chronicle my recent life in pictures. It's kind of like LIFE magazine, only...still available.
Ahem.
David: A Life in Pictures
I snapped this...
moved here...

bought this...

and this...

turned this...

into this...

carved this...

made this...

read this...

...and started reading this.

Phew. I hope that satisfies my avid readers (and my Final Cut ones - haha...).
Until next time, I remain, affectionately yours,

To: President of Costco
Subject: Christmas is a Federal Holiday
Mr. President:
I must say I find it difficult to understand why your company has decided to eschew the word 'Christmas' in favor of the generic 'Holiday.' Is not Christmas on the calendar? Has it not been celebrated for centuries on December the 25th? I do not understand why you choose to defy reality and logic.
Perhaps it is because you would like to be able to sell your 'holiday' products year-round. For instance, you could sell 'holiday ornaments' of several American Presidents to be placed on 'holiday trees' in celebration of President's Day. However, if that is your strategy, I must say it's a bit silly.
Myself and untold thousands of Costco customers would appreciate a bit of logic and sanity with respect your advertisements and store displays at this festive time of the year.
Sincerely,
David Condolora
P.S. Merry Christmas!

required reading for the revolution
I just thought I'd share a quick bit about a book I've been reading as of late. Back in the summer of 2003 I purchased Jeff Shaara's Rise to Rebellion on a whim. I have long been a fan of Shaara's work, and thought I'd enjoy it. However, it sat on my shelf for many years.
Fast-forward to September 2008. I had just finished a book, and noticed Rise to Rebellion sitting on the shelf, unread. Being an election year, I thought it'd be fun to finally sit down and read the book.
Fun? It's been amazing.
Enlightening, entertaining, passionate - all of these words describe the book. It focuses on four men during the period of our country's birth: Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, George Washington, and Thomas Gage. Through extensive research using as many of their own personal writings as he could find, Shaara brings these historical figures to life, and suddenly we see before us real men, standing up for a cause they believe in.
I cannot stress how important this book is for so many Americans. We have lost critical knowledge of the history of our nation, and this book does so much to refresh our memories and our spirits as we dive into a new age of battle for our liberties. I am struck by how often when reading of a founding father's arguments against the British government I am reminded of our current state of affairs, how our liberty and freedom is under assault.
I have not yet finished the book (and I still have The Glorious Cause, the sequel that completes the tale of our original revolution, on my bookshelf), but I still heartily recommend it. If you have not yet read a Shaara book, you're in for a treat - his ability to transport you into the thoughts and emotions of these men is unparalleled. If you have read a Shaara book, you know what a great experience it is.
Either way, you cannot help but be amazed by how ordinary men came together to accomplish something extraordinary.
And that makes this book essential.

valuable vote
If you're curious about not just what the two candidates stand for, but the two parties themselves, there is an interesting guide available called "Vote Your Values." Rather than describe the parties, it uses excerpts from their own platforms to tell you what they're about.
It's non-partisan, and you can download the PDF here:
